Educational Apps for Kids

Phonics, spelling, puzzles and learning games built for children aged 2 to 8. Published on iOS with more than a million downloads across the ReadnLearn family.

I have been building Educational Apps for Kids since 2011. The ReadnLearn family now has 25+ apps published on iOS, covering phonics, spelling, puzzles and learning games for children aged 2 to 8. Together they have had over a million downloads with a 4.5 star average rating across more than 2,000 reviews.

In 2014 Microsoft selected one of these apps — Math Puppy — for AppCampus funding, their mobile app accelerator programme for educational developers. That kind of external validation matters to me, but what matters more is the feedback from parents and educators who use these apps with children every day.

Every app I build also helps fund the development of tools specifically designed for children with autism and neurodivergent learners. Read about the mission.

Planets and Dinos Kids Lab

For Eugenides Foundation

Published on the App Store and on Google Play Store

An educational AR app covering two worlds: planets and dinosaurs. Children choose their theme and explore through seven different activities built into a single app.

Virtual Reality lets children place planets and dinosaurs in their own room through augmented reality, resize them, rotate them and observe them from every angle. The 3D Hologram mode makes characters appear to leap from the screen. The puzzle game offers three difficulty levels and four piece counts (6, 8, 16 or 24) so it scales with the child’s age. The memory game sharpens recall and observation across three difficulty settings. A comparative diagram shows all planets in our solar system from smallest to largest, and dinosaurs scaled against human size. The photo and video mode lets children photograph and film planets and dinosaurs in their own space, control planet rotation speeds and watch dinosaurs move, roar and fall. An information section covers planet characteristics and detailed profiles of well-known and lesser-known dinosaur species including type, size, diet, habitat and period.

The app was developed for KidLab as a companion to their physical memory and puzzle game ranges, with the ReadnLearn owl as the in-app guide character.
