This one comes from a children’s book, where the letter is what starts the whole adventure: a timid dog named Motley writes to Santa, not to ask for a toy, but to ask for help finding his best friend Willow and for the homeless dogs who have no one. Children write their own letter on the same page, and there is room to ask for a wish for someone else, too.

How to write a letter to Santa with your child

Start with a greeting, then say one true thing about the year: something they were proud of, or kind about, or worked hard at. Next comes the wish, and it helps to keep it to two or three things, so the letter stays honest rather than becoming a list. Then add the part children remember most, add a wish for somebody else: a friend, a grandparent, a pet, or the animals still waiting for a home. Finish with a thank you, sign it, and add a drawing at the bottom. Younger children can dictate while a grown-up writes and then sign their own name.
