The story

Letters became emails, and one day Santa Claus became A.I. Santa. Open the app and there he is – with his white beard, red hat, twinkling eyes, granting any wish in seconds. No waiting, no envelopes, and he never forgets a single thing a child asks for.

For a few years it works beautifully. Then the lists start growing. A.I. Santa brings everything, every time, because saying no is the one thing he was never taught to do.

Five days before Christmas, ten-year-old Alex has an idea. Why ask only for Christmas? He writes a list for the whole year: every pencil that breaks, every game that comes out, a laptop in January, a robotic dog in February. A.I. Santa starts to count. 365 days, ten presents a day, 3,650 at least. He cannot keep up. The screen goes black.

ERROR 404. A.I. SANTA NOT FOUND. Christmas is cancelled.

Every wish list in the world is gone, and his sister Marina is very sad as she didn’t even get to write hers. So Alex and Marina reach for something older than any app: some paper, a pencil, and a letter to the real Santa Claus. Children around the world do the same, and many add something of their own, a drawing, a card, homemade cookies, apologizing for all the years when all they did was to ask for more.

A.I. Santa did not know how to say ‘no’. So when one boy asked for a whole year of presents, he started counting. But, then the screen went black…

An A.I. Santa who crashes. A boy who asks for a whole year’s worth of presents and almost gets away with it. Alex isn’t punished for being clever - he simply learns something along the way. And the last page has a joke children will remember: ask A.I. Santa for everything, and a message appears: “Maybe you should ask Alex first. He knows.”

What age is this book for?

Written for ages 6 to 9, and it reads aloud beautifully from about 5. Confident readers of 7 and up can take it on themselves.

Is it a story or an activity book?

A story first. It is a fully illustrated storybook, with eight activity pages at the back that extend it.

Do I need to know anything about A.I. to read it with my child?

No. That is rather the point. The Dear Parents page gives you a few simple ideas, and “let’s find out together” is a perfectly good answer to anything you are unsure of.

Is it anti-technology?

No. A.I. is treated as a tool that is useful, fast, and sometimes wrong. The book asks children to be curious about it and to question it, not to fear it.
